Can't type a character, or don't know what it's called? Draw it instead. Sketch the shape with your mouse, finger or stylus, press Recognize, and the tool suggests the Unicode characters that look most like your drawing, each with its code point and official name. It works for letters from many writing systems, mathematical and technical symbols, arrows, punctuation, emoji, musical notation, ancient scripts and more, over 28,000 characters in total.
Everything happens inside your browser. Your drawing is never uploaded or stored anywhere, because all of the matching is done on your own device. Pick the right match to see its code point, copy it, or open its page on this site for more detail.

How to use the character drawing tool
Draw your character. Use your mouse, finger or stylus in the box. You can use as many strokes as you need, for example the dot and the stem of an "i", or both lines of "=".
Press Recognize. The tool compares your drawing with the shapes of thousands of characters and lists the closest matches. Nothing is searched until you press the button, so you can finish your drawing first.
Look through the candidates. The best match is at the top. The score shows how close each match is, and a higher score means a closer match. Each row gives the character, its code point (such as U+006F) and its official Unicode name.
Pick the one you want. Click a character to add it to the Text box under the drawing, or click the clipboard button to copy just that character. Use Copy text to copy everything in the box. The code point (such as U+006F) is a link to that character's page on this site.
Check the look-alikes. Many characters from different alphabets look the same, such as the Latin O, Greek omicron and Cyrillic O. Where a row has a look-alikes button, it opens a list of the others, so you can choose exactly the one you mean.
Not quite right? Use Undo stroke to remove your last stroke, or Clear to start over, then press Recognize again. Show lets you see more than the top 10 results.
Tips for better results
Draw one character at a time and keep it simple. Capture the overall shape rather than fine detail.
Size and position don't matter, because your drawing is scaled automatically. The proportions do matter, so a short flat line is read as a dash, not a tall bar.
The order and direction of your strokes make no difference.
If the right character isn't in the first few results, try drawing it slightly differently, for instance with or without serifs, or with a single-storey "a" instead of a double-storey one.
Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters are not included. For those, browse the character lists on this site.
Supported Scripts
The tool can recognize 28,711 characters from 155 writing systems, plus symbols, punctuation, emoji and combining marks. The number beside each name is how many of its characters are included. Some scripts are only partly covered, because a character can only be matched if a font draws it.
