The Unicode Consortium has specified a number of contiguous ranges of the numeric character codes (codepoints) of the Unicode character set for administrative and documentation needs. The pertinent block or blocks are typically taken into account when discussing and evaluating proposals such as the addition of new glyphs. Each block typically—but not always—aims to provide glyphs for use in one or more particular languages or in a broader range of contexts like arithmetic, surveying, decorative typesetting, social forums, etc.
