Thaana Unicode Block

The Thaana Unicode block is a designated range of code points in the Unicode Standard that is used for encoding the Thaana script, which is employed in writing the Maldivian language, Dhivehi. This script is unique to the Maldives and is characterized by its right-to-left directionality, a feature it shares with other scripts such as Arabic and Hebrew. Thaana is an abugida, where each consonant carries an inherent vowel sound that can be altered with diacritics. It includes a total of 50 basic characters, wherein the first nine consonants are derived from Indo-Arabic numerals, adapted to form a script that is visually distinct from other regional scripts.

The Thaana block in the Unicode Standard occupies the range from U+0780 to U+07BF. Alongside the basic consonants, this block contains various vowels and consonantal diacritics that allow for the richness of the Dhivehi language's phonetics to be accurately represented in digital text. It also includes a number of additional characters that are used for representing special sounds or older orthographic conventions. The creation of a separate Unicode block for Thaana ensures the proper digital representation and preservation of this unique script, facilitating its use in modern technology and communication while supporting the cultural and linguistic identity of the Maldivian people.
